Are you totally lost when it comes to choosing gifts? What do you get your niece for her 13th birthday? How about a gift for your cousin, someone you've seen only twice in your life, who is getting married? What about a gift to say thank you to your neighbor who watches over your house when you are out of town?

You want the gift to be appropriate for the recipient but you have no clue what a thirteen year old would like, what your cousin needs or wants and you certainly don't want to give your neighbor the wrong idea or belittle their efforts.

Here are some hints to help with all these gift giving situations:

1. 13 year old birthday - Ask questions. Give your sibling a call and ask what their daughter's current interests are. Teenagers are one of the hardest to buy gifts for. Their interests can change from day to day, so asking someone close to them can give you an insight into the type of gift to purchase. Some different types of gifts to think about would be trendy, fashionable, and personalized. Most thirteen year old girls want to be trendy, and of course look good, and they love to see their name in print.

2. A Wedding - Do they have a gift registry? Most couples set up a gift registry listing gifts they want or need. This doesn't mean you have to purchase something off their registry, but it will give you a good idea of the types of gifts they are wanting. Some of the different types of gifts to look for would be practical, decorative and personalized. The couple may be setting up a new home and will need practical items and decorative items. A gift that will remind them for years to come of their union is always a good choice.

3. Thank you - Does your neighbor like to work in the yard or do they have someone do it for them? Are they the type that seems to work all the time? Some different types of appropriate gifts to look for would be thoughtful, fun and relaxing. Just letting them know you appreciate what they do for you with a gift basket of treats or some type of relaxing activity is a gift anyone would enjoy.

Identifying the type of gift you would like to give will help you to focus your search. No matter what the gift giving situation, you can find a gift that you would be excited to give and the recipient will be happy to receive.
