| Beliefs: The Foundation of Success or Failure Mike Lindstrom June 8, 2004 The definition of a belief is a feeling of certainty. Everybody has a belief(s) about something in the world right now. The real question is, “do your beliefs support the person you really want to be?” There are two types of beliefs in the world: Empowering & Disempowering Beliefs Just as quick as your mind can propel you to success, your negative or disempowering beliefs can act as a paralyzing wall, crushing any possibility of remote achievement. Who controls your beliefs right now? The answer is YOU DO! If you are in total control over your belief systems, why in the world would you ever indulge yourself in any negative thinking; thus, rendering you literally helpless and challenged by your own mind. The key to mastering your own belief systems is encoded in the following equation: References-----Beliefs-----Behavior This equation acts much like a continuum whereby one step invariably leads to another. For example, a belief stems from what are called “past references,” or real life experiences that have influenced the mind to possess certain beliefs. Once that belief is embedded in the mind, it will control or dictate the ensuing behavior. I have set forth a real life scenario below to illustrate how this phenomenon plays out in the real world: Reference John is driving his car down the freeway at 70 mph (10 mph over the stated speed limit). Then all of a sudden, a highway patrol car pulls up behind him, flashing his lights, indicating for John to pull over. John, being a respectful citizen, pulls over to the side of the road and receives a traffic ticket and ultimately pays a pretty hefty fine for his speeding. Belief After receiving the ticket and paying the requisite fine, John now maintains a belief that “if I speed on the highway, then I am likely to get a ticket.” This newly found belief stems from his “past reference” of being cited and fined for the activity. Behavior Now that John possesses the belief, “if I speed on the highway, then I am likely to get a ticket,” he will exhibit a new BEHAVIOR in regards to his driving-hopefully, if John is of sound mind, he will learn from the “past reference” and listen to his new BELIEF and thus, slow down his speed on the highway. The key to understanding the power of beliefs in your life is to examine all beliefs that you hold for yourself and those around you. If you control your own beliefs, then you must take control of your limiting beliefs, one’s that hinder your success. If you are overweight and living a sedentary lifestyle, you must take a focused review of your beliefs, because likely you have some limiting beliefs that are stopping you from getting to the gym and eating healthy. Crush those beliefs and fill your mind with positive empowering beliefs. Beliefs like “I am beautiful and healthy and I love taking care of myself” or “To be the best mother/father and true role model, I MUST take great care of my mind and body.” These new empowering beliefs will propel you to success and force you to new BEHAVIORS. Always remember, YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF YOUR BELIEFS so protect your mind from bad references that cause poor beliefs-be the GATEKEEPER of your own mind-this will serve you well for the rest of your life. |
