Landscaping greatly improves your yard’s attractiveness to birds and butterflies. In colder weather, plantings for food and cover are a strong attraction. In summertime, flowers and shrubs are especially appealing to nesting birds as well as insect and nectar eaters.
Consider several of these plants:
*Mexican Tithonia
*Butterfly Bush
*Lantana
*Liatris
*Verbena
*Joe-pye Weed
The dividing line between eastern and western North American birds corresponds approximately with the 100th meridian through central Texas, western Oklahoma and Kansas, central Nebraska and the Dakotas. In Canada, it swings sharply west and closely parallels the eastern side of the Rocky Mountain system almost to Alaska.
Temporary departure of chickadees, tufted titmice, and white-breasted nuthatches from feeders and yards is commonplace in the spring, especially if nest sites are not readily available. Be sure to have your nest boxes clean and up early. That’s sure to increase your chances of having them in your yard.
